Assessment Task: Narrative Inquiry - (equivalent to 2000 words)
Purpose: The purpose of the Narrative Inquiry is to allow PSTs to immerse themselves deeply into professional experiences by using narrative to enable deep reflection, analysis, exploration and questioning. Schools are full of stories. PSTs' narratives might be based on these examples
: an event (or series of events) PSTs were directly involved in
; an event PSTs witnessed in a classroom; an experience PSTs were told about
; what happens in a meeting PSTs attended
; a conversation PSTs have had with a student, teacher, principal, parent
; a conversation PSTs overheard between two teachers, two students etc
.; close observations of one student (following one student in particular..how they were studying etc)
PST's close observations of one teacher.
PST's feelings and impressions of a particular location in a school (e.g. the girls' toilets, the art room, the staff room, the corridor)
Task Description:
The task is to tell two stories (narratives) that raise questions and issues related to professional engagement and practice, ethics and catering for diversity. The stories, that examine two different issues related to teaching and/or learning, can be told in different narrative styles (eg. personal reflective prose, poetry, story, script writing, song, cartoons, story board) and will be based on observations in diverse educational settings and 5 days of professional experience. Narratives should include an analytical commentary, which explores key issues, compares and contrasts experiences, makes connections to theoretical understandings (if you want to reference), professional standards and discusses the implications for future personal practice and professional learning.(ur professional learning and practice)
Commentaries should unpack(breakdown), interpret and analyse each narrative. PSTs should read beneath the lines, pull the story apart and explain what the story means to them and their work as teachers. Why is it interesting or significant? What is learned through the story? How does constructing a narrative enable learning? If appropriate, PSTs can also make connections between the two narratives by comparing and contrasting the stories. In commentaries PSTs should also make connections to similar personal experiences, discuss relevant theories and personal goals, values and beliefs.(what did u learn from it)Making connections like these deepens thinking. Each narrative should be approximately one page in length and the commentary related to both narratives should be 1 - 2 pages.
Additional details:
Details about specific students/schools should be de-identified prior to submission.
Students should submit all work by the specified due date to the TurnItIndropbox on Moodle.
It is preferred that all items are compiled into one document for submission (use photos, etc., as needed).
