If personal ethics are the dictates of an individual's conscience, then professional ethics are the individual's commitment to follow a particular code of behavior that is defined by his profession." This is a great way to look at a it. Professions dictate a code of conduct or behavior. In your bio you mentioned that you are in the process of becoming a police officer. This reminds me of an excerpt from the textbook. Chapter one in Thinking Critically About Ethical Issues, discussed the differences between laws and ethics. Many laws are created for the safety of the general public. Think about what doctors face when they have patients that have signed "do not resuscitate" forms. A DNR order tells medical professionals not to perform life saving methods. Doctors must abide by this order or they are breaking the law. What if this goes against the health care professional's ethical beliefs.

Are laws possible without ethics? Why or why not?
