Question

It is always best to actively ask about their personal and communication preferences. Different cultures have different communication styles. To better tailor the approach to be more culturally sensitive we must ask and learn how the patient would like to communicate. As a culturally competent nurse I would be respectful and learn of cultural practices that might impact their healthcare. Gaining knowledge of the specific culture helps us nurses understand when individuals of different cultures don't want to express when they are in pain and in this instance, don't want to wear an oxygen mask because in Mr. Pierre's culture they think that only really sickly people use oxygen.
