Persistent Organic Pollutanants: Bioaccumulation Measurements
Question 11
The following molecules are known Persistent Organic Pollutants, which are globally monitored & regulated. Their log(Kow) values, as reported by the United Nations Environmental Protection Agency (UNEP) in 1995, are given here. Where ranges are given, this indicates different values obtained under different environmental conditions (salt concentrations, temperatures, and other external variables).
Rank the tendency for bioaccumulation from highest to lowest, by comparing their log(Kow) values for the 4 POPs below. Compare the "worst case scenario", i.e., the strongest tendency to bioaccumulation for each toxin.
For each pollutant say whether it is lowest , intermediate or highest
log(Kow)
Aldrin 5.17-7.4
Chlorodane 6.0
DDT 4.89-6.81
DioxinH7CDD 8.0
Endrin 3.2-5.3
Heptachlor 4.4-5.5
Aldrin ?
DDT ?
Dieldrin ?
Dioxin H7CDD
