J.S. is a 55-year-old man who is referred to the vascular surgeon's office for right calf pain that starts when he begins to walk fast or exercise and is relieved by rest. The lower leg becomes pale. On physical examination, the pulses of the dorsum of the foot (dorsalis pedis) and the posterior tibialis are very diminished. The surgeon mentioned that this was a case of intermittent claudication secondary to peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The physician believes the partially blocked artery must be just behind the knee. The patient has a history of hyperlipidemia and type 1 diabetes mellitus.
