An underground storage tank was used to store toluene. Over a period of time some of the toluene leaked from the tank, contaminating the soil and groundwater below the tank. A subsurface investigation reveals that approximately 100 pounds of toluene remains in the vadose zone (above the water table). It is proposed to clean the soil by soil vapor extraction, in which air is drawn through the soil to vaporize the contaminant.
