A woman in her mid-20s was admitted to the hospital after a 2-week period of intermittent, mild, partial seizures. She also presented with fever, headache, lethargy, and poor recall of new verbal material. She had suffered a grand mal seizure at home just prior to her admission, and had no recall for the previous week. After administration of acyclovir, penicillin, and phenytoin, her symptoms at first improved, and then declined over the next week. She became amnesic and her doctors finally made a diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis.
