Performativity in Film

1. For this assignment, choose any tv show, series of movie that you are currently watching or have been wanting to watch.

As you watch, make notes about how the film is portraying gender. Remember that Gender is NOT biological sex and it is not sexuality. Be as specific as possible. Here are some questions to consider:

1. How is gender being performed? (What are the films' ides about how women/men should act, what they should look like, what careers they have, etc)

2. Do you see any issues or problems with any of the ways gender is being presented? Are there any stereotypes? Outdated ideas? over-simplified characters?

3. How does the character's gender affect their story?

4. Psychology teaches us that our perceptions are affected by what we see in media MORE THAN WHAT WE SEE IN REAL LIFE. Knowing this, what is this show teaching you/the audience about gender?

5. What do you think is the ideal way for gender to be shown in Media? (not just this show but ALL media)
