The purpose of a performance appraisal exercise is to make sure that employees receive a fair and honest review of their performance, provide feedback to employees with the intention to improve their effectiveness in the future and measure an employee's contribution to the organization.  However, poor appraisal instruments can be ineffective, destructive and sometimes costly. The purpose of this exercise is for you to create a performance appraisal instrument and then describe in paragraph form how this performance appraisal instrument will improve performance.   For simplicity's sake, we job will be to create a performance appraisal instrument for an IUP Faculty Member teaching in the HRER program.   Answer the Topics discussed below:

  1. I want you to list the 5 or 6 most important aspects of a faculty members job as you would see it.   Now consider this.  Lecturing in a component of a bigger job responsibility, teaching.  Let's not get too specific on the 5 or 6 things.   What are the measurable criteria that you can say make a good faculty member?  And please resist the temptation to say, "designs easy test", unless you want to fail this assignment.   List 5 or 6 and tell me why they are important
  2. Developing appraisal instruments with up to 10 measurable criteria that can be used to measure the 5 or 6 items you listed above.  Good appraisal instruments do not use yes/no answers, but they also don't use 1-10 scales.  Create a scale or rubric that can be objectively used for each of the measurable items you list under this section. 
  3. Describe in paragraph form why the appraisal instrument you have created can be objectively measured.  How will the 10 items you decide to measure make sure that we are giving a faculty member an objective appraisal that can be useful to them. 
  4. What did you do to minimize bias in the performance appraisal instrument you have created?
  5. Final thoughts here.  How will you perform this appraisal?  What will you do to complete this in real life?  How will you communicate this appraisal to the faculty member?   Are there any other things you would like to put into this exercise to convince the person grading this assignment that you should get an A?
