In this assessment, you will look at understanding skin and nail conditions, and how to deal with contraindications at Beautiful Beginnings in relation to gel nails and beauty treatments.
You will also look at product knowledge and ingredients used in a range of professional products, along with the chemical components and effects of products and ingredients on the skin and nails.
2. Brief
In completing this assessment, you will demonstrate that you understand:
• nail diseases and disorders
• how to deal with contraindications and refer to the appropriate professional as needed
• the products and ingredients used in gel nail treatments
• benefits, effects and contraindications to a range of beauty treatments
• how to treat adverse effects
• selecting products and tips for gel nail services
• professional product ranges.

1. Background/Overview
As a Nail Technician, you must be able to consult your clients to prepare a treatment plan that suits their requirements and nail conditions. An accurate treatment plan can help you perform the service correctly and as per the clients' needs and wants. You must be able to perform the treatment to salon standards and following industry timeframes.
2. Brief
In completing this assessment, you will demonstrate that you understand how to:
• Perform a thorough consultation
• Identify contraindications to gel nail applications and refer client to appropriate professional as required
• Prepare the treatment area, yourself and client for the treatment
• Use personal protective equipment
• Perform the treatment as per the treatment plan
• Review the treatment with client and record the outcomes on client service plan
• Provide aftercare advice and rebook client for future treatments
This assessment has nine (9)Tasks
Visual Diary Practical Task
Your visual diary allows you to practice Gel nail treatments on a range of clients using your student kit provided to you by Open Colleges. By practicing these treatments and receiving feedback from your trainer/ assessor you will improve your practical skill level prior to Structured Workplace Learning.
This visual diary contains:
All areas of each form must be completed with the details you have obtained from the client, steps you have performed and aftercare advice you have provided the client. Any clients used for the purpose of the visual diaries must be 16 years or older. Clients for treatments 1-4 must be new clients. For each treatment you need to upload before and after photos. Photo evidence needs to clearly show yourself with the client performing the treatment in your work area.
You are required to perform the following treatments as a minimum:
• Treatment 1-Gel polish (45 minutes) - New client
• Treatment 2 -Colour gel overlay on natural nails(60 minutes) - New client
• Treatment 3-Gel overlay over clear tips (90 minutes) - New client
• Treatment 4-French Gel overlay on natural tips (90 minutes) - New client
• Treatment 5 - Gel refills (90 minutes) - Repeat client
• Treatment 6 - Gel refills (90 minutes) - Repeat client
• 3 x Gel removal (30 minutes) in conjunction with other treatments above - Repeat clients
Each treatment must include the following steps:
• Complete the Preparation checklist
• Complete the Client information and release form
• Establish client priorities by performing a thorough consultation with the client
• Complete a Consultation Form
• Check the client for contraindications and refer where required
• Complete a Treatment Plan Form
• Set up treatment area with all tools, products and equipment needed to perform the treatment
• Take a before photo
• Sanitise your hands and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) where required
• Perform gel nail treatment as per Open Colleges procedure
• Maintain posture of self during treatment to minimise fatigue
• Use water, power and products efficiently whilst performing the treatment
• Seek client feedback and complete Feedback form
• Take after photos (ensure some photos are close-up)
• Dispose of waste material in a lined rubbish bin
• Disinfect tools and equipment
• Complete the Self-Reflection Form.
