In a power plant, a shell-and-tube type heat exchanger is used as a condenser. This heat exchanger consists of 20,000 tubes and the fluid velocity through the tubes is 2 m/s. The tubes are made of admiralty metal and have 18 BWG, 7/8" OD. The cooling water enters at 20°C and exits at 30°C. The average temperature of the tube walls is 55°C and the shell-side heat transfer coefficient is 4,000 W/m2 · K. Fouling on both sides is neglected.
