Design Project - A/C System for SPD Gymnasium

Use the following information to help you to carry out the design project.

Important Information

You are appointed as the Consultant Engineer to design the year-round air-conditioning system for the SPD Sport Center, which consists of two zones: gymnasium and changing room. Conditioned air supplying to both zones is providing by one central system. The central air-conditioning system consisting of adiabatic air mixer and cooling coil, whereas individual zone is installed with its own re-heater, humidifier, filter and fan (with negligible heat gain).

Details of these two zones are:

Internal volume of gymnasium = 750 m3

Internal volume of changing room = 160 m3

During Spring season (February and March):

The ambient air is at 18 °C DB and 85 % R.H.

For the two zones under consideration:

Design Tasks

(I) Form your own Design Team (group size: 2 students; other group size needs approval).

(II) Perform the design project and submit the report (don't exceed 30 pages) before end of Week 11.

(III) The suggested air-conditioning system should be able to handle the air-conditioning of SPD Sport Center throughout the whole year, and should include the following information:
a) Condition of the supplied air to EACH of these two zones.
b) Condition of air entering the cooling coil.
c) Heat rejection rate at the cooling coil.
d) Rate of condensation at the cooling coil.
e) Heat addition rate to EACH re-heater.
f) Rate of moisture addition at EACH humidifier.

(IV) Your report should also include:
a) The air-conditioning plant layout.
b) Operation method of the air-conditioning plant in every season.
c) All air-conditioning process lines on the psychrometric chart (one chart for each season).
d) Brand and model of the suggested air-conditioning system.

Verified Expert

The current work gives one of the possibilities of designing an air conditioning system with the desired outputs as per given requirements which is unique in a way that each component is designed individually which later can be combined to make a central air conditioning system.
