Applied Research for Information System Professionals
Learning outcome 1: perform literature review and identify gaps in the literature;
Learning outcome 2: evaluate strategies for the solution of applied research problems in information systems;
Learning outcome 3: structure and develop research plans using applied research methods;
Learning outcome 4: apply the principles of research ethics in all research activities;
Learning outcome 5. interact and collaborate effectively in teams;
Learning outcome 6. synthesise and communicate IS research information effectively in written and verbal communication.
Task - As a team, you will collaboratively write a paper for submission to the Pacific-Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS 2023).
You are required to form a team of three to collaboratively work on a research topic. Approval from the course examiner is required for groups of two or more members.
Research topic: The team members should have already developed similar expertise while writing assignments 1 and 2 on the same topic area. The conference paper topic should be extended and linked to Assignments 1 and 2, and agreed upon by all team members. The expectation is to submit a research-in-progress paper using the conference template.
Forming teams: Use the forums to let others know what your research topic is, and what research questions (gaps that you had identified in Assignment 2) that you are interested in investigating. Start discussions in the forums and form a team with others who have similar interests. The course examiner will help put you in a team if you are not able to form a team.
Research Team and Research Topic Proposal
• The title should clearly represent the research problem addressed.
• The abstract is a brief summary to accurately describe the research aims, how the research is conducted, and the results achieved. The abstract is usually written last.
Introduction, Literature Review, and Research Questions
• The introduction should give some background information, state the research purpose, clarify key terms and indicate the scope of the paper.
• Include at least 20 references in the Literature review, explain how the references are relevant, identify the research gaps and justify the directions of your research.
• Clearly state the research questions. You need to build an argument based on the purpose of the research and then state your research questions. You should also discuss the significance of your research.
Research Methodology, Data Collection and Analysis (30 marks)
• Outline the underlying research philosophy, explain and justify your choice of research methodology.
• Explain and justify your choice of data collection instruments, describe the sampling strategy and rationale of sample selection.
• Describe and explain how the data is analysed (statistical analysis, thematic coding).
Research Ethics
• Discuss the consent, access and associated ethical issues of your research, particularly when your research is based on data from people and about people. You need to discuss this by anticipating what ethical issues may arise in your proposed project and how you will deal with those issues. The key ethical issues that you may need to address are anonymity and confidentiality of data, privacy, the use of research results, and intervention and advocacy.
Discussion and Conclusion
• Discuss the results of your data analysis, and how the results answer and address the research questions.
• Based on the analysis results, evaluate the performance of your research, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your approach, and future research gaps and directions.
Individual: Journal and Reflection Report on Padlet collaboration
• A reflective report allows you to learn from your teamwork experience. It is intended to make connections between what you did and what you need to improve to become an effective team player in a research team.
• Prepare a journal that records the team activities and reflection of your research work. In date order, clearly list the following in a table:
o Date of research activity
o Time duration of the activity
o Description of activity
o Contribution of individuals and collaboration
o Reflection related to the activity
• A contribution table (similar to the one in Appendix 1) with columns that reflect the actual contribution of individual team members.
• Evidence of contribution - based on the records and activities, and information/drafts uploaded to
the team's Padlet page.
