PCSC101 PROCESS CONTROL
This assignment is designed specifically to assess the required graduate attributes (ECSA Gas) for this subject. The three GAs assessed are ELO 2: Application of scientific and engineering knowledge, ELO 9: Independent learning, and ELO 10: Engineering professionalism will be assessed using the attached rubric. All these GAs must be achieved in order to obtain a DP and pass this subject.
HAZOP STUDY AND PROCESS CONTROL UPDATE ON THE STEAM PLANT IN S3 BASEMENT LABORATORY.
HAZOP Study is carried out during operation or in an existing process to ensure that plant emergencies and operating procedures are regularly reviewed and updated as required.
The Chemical Engineering Laboratory in S3 basement is required to carry-out and update a steam plant emergencies and operating procedures. As a process engineer available on site, you are required to carry- out the necessary work and lead this project.
The steam plant consists of the boiler, feed water tank, fuel tank, turbine and condenser. The fresh water is filled to the feed water tank to a certain level and feed the boiler to a certain level using the feed pump. Diesel is used as fuel in the boiler to boil the water to form pressurized steam. The pressurized steam is the force that cause the turbine to rotate at a very high speed to generate electricity. The low-pressure steam after pushing through the turbine is sent into the condenser where the steam is condensed to its liquid form. The condensate from the condenser returns into the boiler feed water tank. There is also a JOJO tank in the S3 basement laboratory that collect water from a distillation column condenser, evaporator and heat exchanger practicals instead of sending these streams to the drain.
IN THIS ASSIGNMENT, EACH STUDENT HAS TO CARRY OUT THE FOLLOWING TASKS:
1. Using a computer software (e.g. Ms Visio), draw a full P&I diagram of the current steam plant process.
2. Describe the current P&ID control system of the feed tank and the boiler, and state whether the controllers and/or sensors display/s are locally mounted or main panel mounted.
3. Tie in the new system from the JOJO tank into the steam plant process to save water and energy.
4. Perform HAZOP in full on the steam plant combining existing and the Tie in the above to make sure that all safety precautions are taken into consideration in the proposed mass and energy saving system.
5. Draw an updated P&ID system that you have just HAZOPed for information preservation.
The assignment must be typed (font: Calibri, 12 points, and 1.5-line spacing).
The aim of the assignment is to engage the students to draw P&I diagrams for a real existing process. The students must be able to identify the type of control measurements learned in class from the real process and perform HAZOP study on the proposed process as an independent learning outcome or attribute.
