Assessment task - Professional Practice Assessment
Professional Practice Assessment Task 1:
When working as an enrolled nurse (during your placement), you are required to apply appropriate knowledge and maintain various professional interactions with your clients (residents or patients).
As part of this unit assessment requirements, you must:
• Perform five different professional interactions
• Demonstrate adaptation to the nursing role and application of knowledge of nursing practice in these interactions, and
• Reflect on any five (5) professional interactions with clients using the templates provided at the end of this task.
These nursing interactions could include:
• Assisting residents to perform personal care procedures, such as showering, feeding and elimination;
• Assisting residents with a range of motion exercises;
• Conducting a health examination;
• Gathering healthcare information to develop or amend a nursing care plan;
• Providing health teaching;
• Assisting with pain assessment and management; and
• Resolving residents' complaints.
You must comply with the requirements of the:
• Principles and parameters of nursing practice (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia professional practice standards, codes and guidelines);
• Enrolled nurse scope of practice; and
• Role of the enrolled nurse within health care environments.
You are required to de-identify the resident when preparing the report (do not use any information in your report that would identify the resident).
This assessment task could be undertaken while performing nursing procedures relevant to other units of competency. Your professional interactions with residents, family, carers, colleagues and healthcare team members will be considered in assessing your skills.
The Host Facilitator or EQUALS' Clinical Facilitator will observe your performance and complete the observation checklist (provided in the logbook) and assessment outcome sections based on the skills you demonstrated (in relation to demonstrating adaptation to the nursing role and application of knowledge of nursing practice) and the documentation completed.
You should familiarise yourself with the observation checklist prior to undertaking the assessment.
