Assignment - Design and Manufacturing
1. During a routine non-destructive testing, maintenance staff discovered a crack in a structural element (A bar with rectangular cross-section) of the lifting machine shown in Figure Q1. As a precautionary measure, chief engineer decided to replace it with an identical part made from AISI1020 plain carbon steel rod which is the only suitable material currently available in the company's workshop. Assume that you have been assigned to check the suitability of the material for this application. Following are the data available for you:
The length of the structural element to be replaced = 60cm
The cross-sectional area of the structural element to be replaced = 30cm2
The estimated maximum axial tensile load the structural element is subjected to = 58kN (The structural element need to support only the above axial tensile load)
The lifting machine is operated in a moderately challenging environment and the company has purchased the plain carbon steel rod from a trusted material supplier.
Perform an appropriate design calculations and state your recommendation to the chief engineer. Provide justifications for all your assumptions and selections.
2. A deep groove ball bearing is required to support a rotating shaft of a heavy duty machine. The estimated radial load applied on the bearing is 4.2kN. The expected axial load on the bearing is small and negligible. The shaft diameter is 45mm and it rotates at 6500rpm. The expected service life of the bearing is 5000hrs. Select and specify an appropriate bearing. State all your assumptions and selections clearly.
