Assessment - Group presentation showcase
Your Task
• Form groups of 3-4. If you do not have a group before the session, your teacher will allocate you to a group in class.
• You will be given a business problem and small data set
• Construct a dashboard and participate in an 8-minute role play involving the presentation of results to a government committee.
Assessment Description
Lithium - Australia's "gold mine!"
• Background: Australia supplies about 60 per cent of the world's lithium in the form of a mineral concentrate called spodumene. With an abundance of 'hard rock' lithium, we are amongst the countries with the largest lithium deposits globally.
• Business problem: As a member of Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade, determine whether Australia should give preference to China or USA when exporting Lithium, based on your data analysis. Other trading partners for the export of Australian lithium can also be recommended.
• You will also be given a small amount of data on Lithium trading.
• The team has been asked to perform an analysis with visualisations (Part A), and present their findings (Part B) to a Director from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
• The reason for presenting to a government executive is to clarify which countries are preferable for Australia to trade with for the export of Lithium, based on your data analysis.
Assessment Tasks
• Part A: Construct a dashboard with at least three charts, using software of your choice.
o You will be given 50 minutes to create visualisations in your groups that best represent the data.
o After 50 minutes have elapsed submit your visualisations via MyKBS.
• Part B: Once the visualisations are created, each member of your group should take one of these roles:
o Data Analyst (Understands data available and analysis)
o Data Visualiser (Understands best practice in designing of dashboards)
o Analytics Translator (Understands how to translate the results for executives in brief and
layman's terms (simple language)
o Executive from the Foreign Affairs Department (understands the "big picture", and is in the audience asking questions)
o If you only have three members, you can combine the Analyst and Visualiser roles.
• You will have 30 minutes to prepare your presentation.
• Each group will have 8 minutes to present the dashboard.
• The pretend Data Analyst, Data Visualiser, and Data Translator should spend two minutes each
presenting the results, as follows
o The Data Analyst will explain what data was available and the analysis
o The Data Visualiser will explain overall design considerations
o The Data Translator will explain aspects of the results in simple language (storytelling)
• The Executive from the Department of Foreign Affairs (audience) will have two minutes to ask relevant questions and comment on the results.
