Rhetorical Analysis
Rhetorical Analysis: requires you to apply your critical thinking skills in order to "break down" a text. You break off the parts from the whole of the piece you're analyzing. The goal of rhetorical analysis is to articulate how the author writes, rather than what they actually wrote. To do this, you will analyze the strategies the author uses to achieve his or her goal or purpose of writing their piece. A rhetorical analysis is not just a summary of what you have read or listened to.
First, name some of the rhetorical choices/strategies you have looked at through both blended and face-to-face content:1. Problem2. Cost/benefits3. Question answer4. Imaginary 5. Narrative6. Describe7. Examples8. Culture9. Ethos and pathos.
Additional Information: If you're having trouble identifying the difference between a summary and an analysis, here is an example to help you:
Summary: Smith says global warming has negative effects and we should care about our world's future.Rhetorical analysis: Smith provides multiple negative effects of global warming and punctuates his sentences with exclamation marks; thus, he uses quantitative descriptions and punctuation to create a sense of urgency in his readers to care about the planet's status regarding global warming.
Your assignment: Perform a rhetorical analysis on the TED Talk viewed in class. Use the chart below to analyze the rhetorical choices the writer made. Then, you will build up these ideas into a 250-word rhetorical analysis that you will submit to Canvas by November 25 (midnight).

This paper is essentially a rhetorical analysis of Jane McGoniga’s 2010 Tedtalk titled “Gaming can make a better world”.The discussion centers on the use of the rhetorical appeals of Logos, Pathos, and Ethos and how they have made the speech persuasive to her audience. Generally, the analysis has seen that the speaker has endeavored to be persuasive enough through using evidence from research, demonstrations and compelling arguments.
