Topic: Fluid systems/Mechanical engineering

Assignment Description:

1. Choose a fluid flow of interest to you - Be creative!

a. This flow could be something from your everyday life, something you observe in nature, a mini experiment you set up yourself, etc...

b. Opportunity for extra credit: Those students making the videos which I judge to be the most creative may earn up to two bonus points on their final grades.

2. Take a video visualizing this flow

a. High speed videos or time lapse videos are encouraged! Information on the recording rate of many smartphones (iPhones, Androids, etc...) is available online

b. GoPro cameras and regular video cameras are available for checkout at the Digital Media Commons

3. Perform a dimensional analysis of the flow

a. Choose your dependent and independent variables wisely.

b. Determine which dimensionless numbers are important.

4. Calculate estimated values for those dimensionless numbers

a. You can find density, surface tension, and viscosity values for many fluids by searching online.

b. It's ok to estimate 'order of magnitude' values for parameters that are hard to find.

5. Describe in a few sentences what, if anything, the values of those dimensionless numbers tell you about the flow characteristics.

a. For example, If Re=100,000 you will know that inertial forces are dominant and that viscous forces can be safely ignored. Or, if the Weber number We=1, then you know that inertia and surface tension are both important.

The assignment should be a video: the video should have the video of the fluid "water in a fountain' the picture that I submitted, an explanation of the that video in words , plus some calculations. Create a video describing your video (Step 11, showing the video you took (Step 2), your dimensional analysis (Step 3). your estimated values (Step 4), and a few sentences describing the meaning of those dimensionless numbers (Step 5). Descriptions in the video may be oral or in text. Calculations should be given in enough detail for me to follow along. Directions for uploading your final product to Canvas will be given subsequently.
