People with disabilities have been confined in many ways throughout history, both in the US and abroad. Confinements include prisons, jails, institutions for the intellectually disabled, treatment centers, nursing homes, sheltered workshops, and psychiatric hospitals. These confinements typically are more likely for people with disabilities with multiple intersecting identities (intersectionality), which we will cover in greater detail over the next few weeks. Due to the US healthcare system, even young adults who happen to have physical disabilities may, depending on what state they live in, have no choice but to live in a nursing home.
