Question

A patient with a traumatic head injury has been brought into the emergency department (ED) by air life. An intracranial pressure (ICP) monitor has been placed. Opening pressure was 15 but 30 minutes later the ED nurse notices it is now 30. The ED nurse notifies the provider. He orders an arterial blood gas and asks to be notified of the patient's carbon dioxide (CO2) level. The CO2 is 48. The provider orders to increase the patient's respiratory rate on the ventilator. How does the ED nurse interpret hyperventilation and the direct effect on ICPs?
