Question

Why (or why not) is it important to track observation patients in a hospital setting? Who (i.e. what other setting outside of the hospital) is impacted by a patient's observation status during hospitalization? Give an example of how observation status could affect a patient financially while they are inside the hospital and after they leave the hospital (especially if they need Home Health or SNF care). Give three specific examples of when Observation level of care makes sense (hint: think of the many specific medical and surgical advancements in the last ten years that used to require longer hospital stays and more invasive procedures). Who (list specific roles inside the hospital) is impacted by a patient's observation status during hospitalization? Why (in your opinion) do you think so many people are confused by Observation status (thinking it is the same as Inpatient status)?
