The nurse is caring for a 35-year old patient who sustained a penetrating abdominal wound and multiple bruises and contusions in a farming accident. The abdominal wound was very contaminated, but cleaned before and during surgery. The wound-care specialist has been consulted and has taught the nursing staff how to do the dressing changes. The patient has a peripheral IV and is receiving IV antibiotics and pain medication. The nurse identifies that the patient is at risk for infection.
