Question

A 87-year-old White male is told by his physician that he needs B12 shots every 2 weeks for a period of 6 weeks. In addition, he is to check his glucose by sticking his finger daily one of three times: before or after breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The physician then says that he wants to see him for a return visit in 6 weeks. After the physician leaves, you ask the patient if he understands the instructions, and he says yes. You ask him to repeat the instructions, and he tells you he must have B12 shots three times per day and check his blood glucose once per day before or after a meal. He must return for a visit in 6 weeks. As a nurse, what would you do? Do you assume that this patient has cognitive problems and cannot care for himself?
