Question

Patient admitted for colon resection. History states that workup in staff physician's office included a colonoscopy. A polyp was removed from the sigmoid colon and a cecal mass was biopsied. Pathology showed the polyp to have a foci of adenocarcinoma in-situ, stalk free of malignancy. The cecal biopsy was adenocarcinoma, invasive. Pre-op workup includes negative cxray and negative CT abd/pelvis. Patient had a right hemicolectomy and a sigmoid colectomy. The pathology report states: Cecum: Mucinous adenocarcinoma extending through bowel wall into pericolonic fat. Sigmoid: No residual tumor following polypectomy. No lymph nodes were positive in either resected segment.
