You may choose to do EITHER ONE of the following activities:

  • Choose ONE of the pathogen evasion strategies listed below, and state ONE SPECIFIC component of the B cell or T cell response that it would prevent.
  • Choose ONE of the components of the adaptive response listed below, and state ONE SPECIFIC strategy that a pathogen could use to evade it.

Your post should list the following in order:

  1. Whether you are addressing a pathogen evasion strategy or adaptive response component.
  2. Which strategy or component you are addressing.
  3. Your response.
  4. A brief justification or explanation.

Once you have submitted your response, you will be able to see other students' responses, and you are welcome to ask questions, leave your comments, or respond to additional prompt options.

Pathogen evasion strategies:

  1. A bacterial species regularly changes out its cell surface carbohydrates
  2. A virus encodes an FcR that it places on the surface of the viral particle and on the surface of infected cells
  3. A virus produces a protein that causes Fas to be removed from the surface of infected cells
  4. A bacterial species produces a toxin that prevents the activation of NFAT
  5. A bacterial species produces a toxin that prevents the interaction of CD40 and CD40L
  6. A fungus produces a chemical signal that decreases expression of CD28 and increases expression of CTLA4
  7. A virus decreases the expression of class I MHC on infected cells

Components of the adaptive response:

  1. Killing of virally infected cells by CTLs
  2. Antibody-mediated neutralization of viral particles
  3. Antibody-mediated opsonization of bacterial cells
  4. T cell help to B cells for generation of pathogen-specific antibodies
  5. T cell help to CTLs
