Research Paper
The research paper is your opportunity to spend an extended time on a particular issue in Critical Thinking. You will have several paper topics provided by the instructor for you to choose from. We use critical thinking to gain knowledge and make good decisions. In many ways that process can break down. The paper topics all explore this region where critical thinking can break down for us; that is philosophically interesting and I look forward to reading your ideas.
You do a little background research, and decide the approach that you will take in your essay.
Possible Directions You Can Take With Your Paper
• You could discuss how more recent thinkers have further unfolded the initial idea.
• Perhaps there are criticisms of the initial idea. What are they?
• You could zoom in on one aspect of the issue.
• You could consider just one specific application of the question or issue.
Paper Topics To Choose From
There is a theme in these subjects-they all have to do with limitations of knowledge & belief, and recognizing those limitations.
1. Hume's Riddle of Induction.
2. Karl Popper: The Logic of Scientific Discovery (falsifiability).
3. Pascal's Wager.
4. Occam's Razor.
5. St. Anselm's Ontological Argument for the existence of God.
6. The Monty Hall Problem.
7. To free a person from error is to give, and not to take away. - Arthur Schopenhauer (PLEASE discuss this with your instructor before writing on it.)
