Problem: A 2000-MW electric generating station burns 278 tonnes of residual fuel oil per hour. The fuel contains 2.6% S and 1.2% ash. The station is equipped with particle, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide emission control systems. The particle collector must operate at efficiencies exceeding 98% because the ash is valuable for its vanadium content. The sulfur dioxide removal device operates at a normal efficiency of 80%.
