A manufacturing organisation which has been having problems with productivity has asked for your advice. They feel that the people working in the organisation are not sufficiently motivated and that their skill levels are undesirably low. They have asked you to advise them regarding the action they might take to address this problem at the local level.

The organisation recently introduced some new machinery which is more efficient than the older machinery that was in use. This has not had the expected increase in productivity and the organisation is worried about return on investment. Management did not provide extensive training for the employees using the machinery because they felt that although the machinery was different and required somewhat different processes for inputs, employees should be able to adapt readily.

You speak to a number of the involved employees and discover that very little effort has gone into providing any sort of training or support for work-based learning pathways. The employees are feeling discouraged and are very uncertain about how to manage the new machinery and accompanying processes.

You decide that training is the best option.

  • What will you do and how will you do it?
  • What strategies can work organisations put in place to support work-based learning and learners?
  • List three problems that might be encountered if participant readiness for learning is not properly assessed.
