You are at a family reunion during the winter break. During this gathering, your Uncle was sharing a story about his 4-year old nephew, Josiah, who was recently diagnosed with ASD. Your Uncle shared with everyone that Josiah had a lot of challenging behaviors when he last saw him and told you about how Josiah's mom hovered over him constantly and gave him whatever he wanted. Your Uncle continued to say that Josiah's behavior was largely due to the Mom's hovering and Josiah's dad's lack of interaction with him. Your Uncle said, "I don't think his mom knows how to handle his behavior and parent him. She needs to instill some discipline in that boy. The dad needs to step in, too, he does nothing." Your Aunt chimed in that there is just too much "hype" around autism and stated her belief that there would be less kids with ASD if our society just mandated parenting classes for everyone. She said: "If parents learned how to discipline their kids, you would see autism decline."
