Question

A 9-year-old child with ADHD is prescribed Ritalin (methylphenidate) during the school week. The parents decide to discontinue the medication on weekends. What important consideration should the nurse practitioner communicate to the parents regarding this practice?

The child may experience enhanced cognitive abilities on weekends. Discontinuing Ritalin on weekends may increase the risk of social challenges for the child. The child will likely develop tolerance to Ritalin if taken continuously. The weekend break will have no impact on the child's ADHD symptoms. The child will not be able to stop medication as an adult.
