CASE SCENARIO 1
ABS-CBN is considered one of Philippines's leading media and entertainment companies, with service offerings across the different platforms of media, servicing a wide array of customer segments. It was the largest television network in the Philippines, until it was shut down of its broadcast operations in 2020.
A lot of public criticisms was drawn on the shutdown of the broadcasting company and raises the question of press freedom under the Duterte administration. ABS-CBN closely documented his drug war, which has left thousands of people dead since he took office in 2016.
Even though the process of the investigation and hearings conducted concludes that there was no breach of laws or franchise terms, the House of Representatives, particularly the Committee on Legislative Franchises, voted 70-11 to deny the franchise renewal.
The shutdown causes the lay-off of more than 4,000 workers of the Corporation in the middle of health and financial crisis. Media coverage during calamities was also reduced to the extent that it caused unpreparedness in the disaster response to far-flung communities. These, among others, are the most felt negative impacts of the shutdown of ABS-CBN. Come this election campaign period in 2022, when everyone was desperately hoping for better governance, one of ABS-CBN's celebrities went viral lately and not in a good way. This celebrity is an active member of the United Methodist Church, and known for her behaviour of preaching Bible verses, encouraging for a heart like Jesus in her vlogs. However, the people began questioning her beliefs due to her recent involvement in the campaign. She was the host of the political rally of:
1) a Presidential candidate who does not have a clean track record (convicted for tax evasion, sued for plunder over pork barrel scam, lied about completing his Bachelor's degree) to be a country leader and is the son of the dictator who first caused ABS-CBN's shutdown year 1972 due to Martial Law;
2) a Vice Presidential candidate who was prayed over by a Most Wanted person in the FBI due to sex trafficking, and is the daughter of Duterte - the second administration to cause the ABS-CBN's shutdown; and
3) a Senatorial candidate who voted Yes to deny the franchise renewal.
Most of the negative reactions came from her former co-workers, who were laid off due to the shutdown, insinuating that the celebrity was not affected by the retrenchment that's why she does not seem to mind her involvement with these people. Most are expression of disappointment and hurt seeing a colleague promotes people who contributed to the shutdown. People are calling out for the Corporation to terminate her contract. However, it can be noted that stipulated in the contract between the Corporation and the celebrity that the former will not in any way get involved in the latter's political choice and view.
