Project Management: Assignment One
Introduction
For this group assignment, you will need to carry out a success/failure analysis of a current or historic large scale project. What is typically defined as a ‘mega-project'. The analysis considers the wider dimensions of "success" and/or "failure" such as the needs of diverse stakeholders (including the environment) and impact across time to provide sustainability.
The presentation should provide an overview of the issues and challenges faced by the project team/organisation. It should then focus on one or two key issues of the project that relate to the topics on the module so far.
Your group should provide a critique of whether these issues have been successfully dealt with, or not as the case may be and what actions the project management team should have taken to manage these issues.
Finally, your group should summarise what learning a project manager or project organisation could take from your analysis.
There are a plethora of projects that you could use for this assignment and you do not have to be restricted to the examples that we have already used in the module. They can be from any country and from any industry, just make sure that there is enough information in the forms of literature and articles available to construct your case.
Here are some examples both specific and generic that you could use:
• World Land Speed Record
• Scottish Parliament building
• Brexit
• Boeing 737 Max
• Scottish Independence
• BBC Digital Media Initiative project
• Edinburgh Trams project
• Velib: Urban self-service bikes (or other bike sharing projects)
• Decarbonisation - renewable energy projects
• Health care projects
• NHS IT for Health
• New health services e.g. air ambulance
• Social care projects
• Eradicating homelessness in Scotland
• Olympic Games or other large scale events
• Berlin Brandenburg Airport
• One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)
• Petronas Twin Towers
• Urban Regeneration
This is just a sample - there are a myriad of projects from around the world which you can choose to analyse.
Make sure you define the scope of your presentation at the stare by identifying the aspects of the project and it management that the group is going to focus on. Put in any references you have used at the end of the presentation using the Harvard style.
