The data set "Hand_153b Simulated polynomial regression data" comes from Hand et al.'s Handbook of Small Data Sets; the data set was originally produced by R. H. Wampler and is designed to produce a perfect quintic fit if the software program functions properly (and R will do the job). The interesting thing to observe here is how the fitted equation converges to an essentially perfect fit as the order of the polynomial increases from 2 to 5.

(a) Obtain a scatter plot of the data (Y on X). Fit polynomial equations of orders 2 to 5.

Overlay the fitted equations on the scatterplot. Label your graph properly, including a legend. I would suggest varying both line colour and line type, but one or the other is sufficient.

(b) Briefly summarize how the proportion of the Total SS that can be attributed to the regression model changes as the order of polynomial increases from 2 to 5. How does this correspond to what you are seeing on your graph?
