Imagine that you are an abuse counsellor who has started working with a client, Amy 21, for issues of low self-esteem and anxiety. Amy was removed from her parent's care at the age of 5 due to severe neglect, after which she was raised by foster carers, where she suffered further neglect and physical and emotional abuse. As an adult, Amy now struggles with very low self -esteem, and often refers to herself as weak, useless, pathetic and a loser. She rarely has anything positive to say about herself. As Amy has anxiety, she rarely leaves the house and does not spend much time with other people - she finds it hard to build relationships and trust others. She spends most of her time at home reading, writing, or painting and has read hundreds of books, She also participates in a pen-pal program writing letters to sick children and elderly people who are lonely. Amy describes this as further proof that her life is pathetic and she is a loser with no friends who no one could ever love. As Amy's counsellor, you want to help empower her by drawing her attention to some of her strenghts. Outline two strengths that you could highlight for Amy.
