The Healthcare Professional - Critical Incident Analysis Essay Assignment

ASSIGNMENT QUESTION -

It is absolutely essential that health care professionals have a deep understanding of the role of that reflection plays in developing good practice. For the health and social care professional reflection needs to go beyond merely describing an incident - it is important to analyse, challenge and evaluate what has occurred and consider possible alternatives and develop a plan for future action. The health care professional needs to consider their own behaviour in a particular situation and to seek reasons for their reaction (Moon 2004). There are numerous reflective models and frameworks available to the health and social care professional to develop reflective practice. Therefore, it is imperative that you demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of reflection; and develop best practice skills in reflection through your 'critical incident' analysis. Your critical incident analysis essay must be written in the first person so it is a perfectly acceptable to write -I, my, me, mine etc. It is about ensuring that 'your voice' is heard throughout the assessment. That you share your feelings, explain your actions and comment on your thoughts within your critical incident analysis.

Task One - You will provide an introduction to your critical incident analysis by providing an overview of the purpose of reflection and the role it plays in developing reflective practice.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA -

  • Knowledge and understanding of reflective practice.

Points to consider:

  • Introduction to the assignment including the areas that will be discussed.
  • An explanation of reflection and the purpose it plays in reflection.
  • Reference/ refer to at least two models of reflection /theories.
  • Examples of reflective practice.
  • Legislation or codes of practice that endorses reflective practice for health and social care professionals.
  • Inclusion of in text citation using the Harvard referencing system.

Task two - Identify a significant incident from the group work over the course of the semester and or group presentation. The incident may be positive or negative. The incident needs to 'stand out' and provides an opportunity to test your learning of the situation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA -

  • Perform a critical incident reflective analysis through the application of a reflective model.

Points to consider:

  • Identify a 'critical incident' as a result of the group presentation and or the group work.
  • The 'critical incident' essay must be written in the first person.
  • Explain/ describe the critical incident.

Task Three - Outline the stages of reflection or critical incident reflective analysis.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA -

  • Knowledge and understanding of reflective practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of theories of reflective practice.

Points to consider:

There are numerous models that can be applied for reflective practice. Any of the following models of reflective practice may be considered

  • Flanagan ( 1954) 'critical Incident',
  • Johns( 2009) Structured Reflective model,
  • Gibbs (1989) Reflective Cycle
  • Kolbs (1984) Learning Cycle
  • Schon (1983) Reflection in action and reflection on action
  • Boud and Walker (1998) Turning reflection into Learning
  • Inclusion of in text citation using the Harvard referencing system

Task Four - Apply a reflective model or framework in your critical incident analysis discussion and produce and Action Plan.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA -

  • Knowledge and understanding of reflective practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of theories of reflective practice.
  • Perform a critical incident reflective analysis.

Points to considers:

  • Application of your chosen model of reflection in your critical incident analysis.
  • Detailed application of the chosen reflective model for the critical analysis.
  • Important that you consider what other possible options that might have been available to you.
  • It is essential that a SMART personal Action Plan is produced.
  • Inclusion of in text citation using the Harvard referencing system.
