Case Study

Mrs B is an 85-year-old woman, who currently lives in an Assisted Living Facility.  Mrs B has presented to the local Emergency Department (ED) with her son Tom.  She is presenting with increased paranoia, visual hallucinations, and agitation. Prior to attending the ED, her son had taken Mrs B to see her GP Dr Smith after the staff working in the Assisted Living Facility raised concerns that Mrs B was becoming increasingly paranoid and suspicious.  During her consultation with her GP, Mrs B. became agitated, and she angrily accused Dr Smith of trying to euthanise her when he was discussing possible treatment interventions that could be used to alleviates Mrs B's symptoms.   Due to Mrs B's level of distress, Dr Smith became concerned about Mrs B's presentation, and he encouraged the son to take Mrs B to the Emergency Department and he follow up the recommendation with a written referral that he would send through to ED.
