Essay
This assignment requires you to produce an original critically reflective essay which is 2000 words in length
Assignment - Essay
This assignment requires you to produce a critically reflective essay which addresses Curriculum, Policy, and Practice. To engage appropriately with the arguments, all Teacher Education Students (TES) must gain access and/or use the Set text (Price and Rogers, 2019) as their key background reading. Before starting your essay, ITE should read several key curriculum, policy, and context-based documents and the weekly readings including the key chapters in the set text. This will help you understand the question requirements and shape your response effectively. The essay requires ITE to engage with materials relevant to your future careers and meet the Aboriginal Education professional requirements at the graduate level (AISTL, 2011).
Unit readings, in conjunction with the lectures, tutorial activities and additional support materials on the vUWS site will provide ITE with the foundational understanding and interconnections between Aboriginal Education Policy, Aboriginal student success, institutional responsibilities and professional opportunities of how to meet Graduate AITSL Professional Standards. The readings and policy documents will also inform your future PRAXSIS in the secondary classroom. Many of the readings in the set text and the weekly reading list will become key components of your essay's reference list and Task 2 requirements. It is essential to keep up with the weekly readings which are outlined in the later pages of the learning guide under Section 3: Teaching and Learning Activities.
Starting the essay
STEP 1: Read
Make sure that you have firstly read the required chapters from the set text Price and Rogers (2019) (Weeks 1-3) and have some sound background information about Aboriginal education in Australia and the complex issues that potentially intersect with your understanding of Curriculum, Policy, and Practice as it relates to you professionally as a graduate.
Then read the first document below. Take notes from this document as it relates to you professionally.
- Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (2022a). Building a culturally responsive Australian teaching workforce. Final reports for Indigenous cultural competency project (June 2022)
Make essay notes as they relate to your potential essay argument. A video of what is required is available on vUWS.
Step 2: Undertake a self-assessment
Using document below, undertake and map your professional identity in the Aboriginal education using pages. In week 2 tutorials, the tutor will walk you through the process of undertaking a self-assessment using the framework document.
Document: Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (2022b) Capability Framework- Building a culturally responsive Australian teaching workforce. (September 2022)
You need to pay particular attention to 'the INTERCULTURAL DEVELOPMENT CONTINUUM' (AITSL, Pages 7-21). Take notes/highlight where you feel you are placed currently as a graduate entering the unit.
STEP 3: Essay Question
The Indigenous Cultural Competency-Final report (AITSL, 2022) provides significant opportunities for teachers to build capacity and make a difference in their future classrooms. Structuring the paper
Using the 'Intercultural Development Continuum framework' and your assessment of yourself, clearly identify TWO key points from your assessment of yourself in the context of the framework that you can action in a positive way as a future classroom teacher.
