1. Some hotel managers believe uniformed security personnel within the hotel increase the comfort level of guests in the same manner as do uniformed police officers. Other managers feel uniformed security personnel increase a guest's concern about security and safety and have a negative effect. Assume vou as the GM were required to make a decision about the issue at your hotel. Would you put your security force in "police-style" uniforms or uniforms that "blend" with your clientele? What factors would influence your decision?

2. Guest safety is a primary concern of all effective hotel managers. What specific steps can you take to ensure that all of the hotel's employees share your con- cern for guest safety? Who at your property should be responsible for ensuring that these steps are implemented? Consider a larger property with a designated security department as well as a smaller property without one.

3. Every hotel location faces unique threats to the safety of its guests and the secu- rity of its assets. Regardless of the threats, GMs must be prepared to deal with a variety of emergency situations. Outline a plan for creating a program you would implement to prepare your hotel for the potential outbreak of a serious fire. What hotel departments should be involved in the plan's development? Where would you go for resources that could help your efforts? Would your plan include "fire drills" that involve clearing the hotel of all guests as a way of practicing the final plan's implementation? Why or why not?

4. MSDSS are a valuable source of safety-related information to workers. It is very common in the United States to see these documents obtained and held for use only in English and Spanish. Increasingly, the hotel industry employs indi- viduals whose native language is neither. Assume that the hotel employs 25 such individuals speaking five different languages. How would you help ensure the safety of these workers with regard to handling chemicals and other toxic materials?

5. Data security is an increasingly important responsibility of hotel GMs. What specific steps would you, as the GM, take to help ensure your hotel is pro- tecting the private information of guests that is stored on your own property's computers?
