Philosopher Charles Taylor's A Secular Age (2017) traces our society's secular developments through history, pointing to secularism's strengths and weaknesses in the modern world. Secularism allows for more options for thought- both areligious and religious- and the ability of the political sphere not to be influenced by any one religious tradition.

The future of religion, particularly here in the increasingly secular world, is directly influenced by how it navigates this secular space. Some religious traditions have chosen fundamentalism, as with Islam and the Iranian Revolution, others liberalism, as with Reform Judaism beginning in the 19th century, and still others somewhere in between.
