Part of our overall goal in the last 4 weeks is to slow down and appreciate a work of art through observation and critical thought. It takes time to observe and process our observations. Our initial observations gives us a superficial sense of the work of art and it is only when we take time to really look, that we begin to see the details. The artist will (sometimes) give us a hint about their intent or narrative with the title but not always. Public galleries will often provide a "didactic" or short info blurb that give us some background on the work of art or the body of work (a body of work is a group of paintings that explore a similar theme - like Picasso's 'Blue Period') however if we really want to know more about the painting or sculpture, we do some research. Historic paintings and sculptures are easy; lot's of research has been done and the information is available almost everywhere. It's the contemporary works of art that are sometimes a little more difficult to gather information on.

The next step in understanding a work of art is research. Digging a little and finding information about the artist and the work they produce(d). This week we are going to gather information about the artist, the style or movement and the work itself.
