Question

If I have a child that I think needs special services I will first reach out to our guidance counselor to start the process. We will then set up a meeting to discuss the child that includes all members who work with the child. We usually start with implementing a functional behavior assessment to rule out any behavior issues and set the child up for success. Once we implement these strategies, we will then monitor the child to see if we notice any improvements. We will then move to our different tiers of support for the child. Learning disabilities are often recognized and diagnosed in the elementary years as children are learning to read, write, and process mathematical problems (American College of Education, 2016). Being a first grade teacher, we will set up academic interventions early in the child's educational career. If we are not seeing any academic successes, even with the interventions, then this will indicate that we need to move onto doing a full evaluation.
