The term "First Do No Harm" is a part of the original Hippocratic oath and is practiced widely by healthcare professionals. The term refers to holding healthcare professionals accountable for intentional wrong doing and harm while providing care to a patient. In my chosen career, paramedicine, this vow is made to oneself every single day. We internally pledge to conserve life, alleviate suffering, encourage the quality of emergency care, and promote health. This also includes thinking not only of what you are required to do by the book, but to remember that some routes of care must be changed to make your patient comfortable. For example, when cardioverting a conscious patient from an unstable rhythm, you must also think of providing a sedative, like Fentanyl, either before or after the procedure. This not only fixes their medical problems, but also makes them a little more comfortable and relieves the pain the cardioversion will provide.
