Jennifer is the director of the Health Information Management Department at Memorial Hospital. She has been in the position for two years, and at the time of her hire there was a transcription supervisor, a coding supervisor and a second-shift supervisor who oversees both second and third shift employees in place. Recently, the transcription supervisor retired, and Jennifer hired a replacement, Amanda. Amanda is scheduled to start in two weeks. Jennifer reviewed the department policy and procedure manual and discovered that while there is an orientation procedure for all hourly positions within the department, there is no orientation procedure for supervisors. The transcription area consists of two on-site employees who transcribe all radiology and pathology reports and a data clerk who is responsible for distributing reports to the EHR as well as distributing copies to their correct locations. The remainder of the transcriptionists (15 FTEs) are remote employees of the hospital. There is no outsourced transcription.
