Question

Walter is a 35-year-old male who comes to your organization to attend a job-training program. Recently, he was referred to you because he has had trouble paying attention, and is in jeopardy of being dropped from the program due to attendance issues. Your organization has a very strict attendance policy and there are no excused absences. When you speak with Walter, you discover that he has Type I Diabetes and a liver condition and is not currently complying with his medication regimen. He also does not attend doctor's appointments regularly. Walter explains that the medication has too many side effects, is too expensive, and that he is tired of wasting time in waiting rooms. Because of his medical coverage, he often has to wait hours to see a doctor, who only sees him for cursory time. He also explains that he can't get anything done because he either has to constantly be in the doctor's office, causing him to get dropped from job training/education programs, or has to ignore his medical issues in order to obtain social mobility. Walter feels that he can't win. On top of this, he has a 3-year-old son, and often has to miss job training.
