Within this unit, you have learned that an organization's performance management system is an ongoing process, combining the business vision with performance objectives and measurements. An annual performance appraisal is common in many organizations, providing feedback on an employee's performance (staff or management) and subsequently leading to the possibility of a pay raise or bonus. The "golden rule" of performance appraisals is that one should never be surprised by their content, i.e., ongoing conversations throughout the year between the rater and ratee should be occurring to prevent surprises. Identify and explain the various uses of performance appraisals. Compare and contrast direct/objective measures to indirect/subjective measures. Which measures do you feel hold more value for the HR professional? Explain.
