Designing a strong organization takes more than just desire - it requires action. Strategic human resource management is about ensuring an organization's internal workforce is moving toward some vision or goal, transforming the 'good' to 'great.' To achieve this, often consultants are contracted to get a clear, objective perspective to what may hold an organization back from being great. This requires good input and analysis. It also requires good decision-making skills that focus on the best way to address strategic issues. The first step that any effective curator of strategy or practitioner of human resource management takes when working with an organization is to understand their problems.
Watch the news on any given day, and there are unending stories that impact the logistics of doing business. Notwithstanding recent shocks from the external environment (e.g., pandemic, cultural unrest, and political instability), organizations from all industries and markets are facing challenges in executing their strategic plan. Some may suffer from unresolved issues of poor goal setting, lack of strategic alignment, and/or inability to track progress, while others may contend with much large issues like changing consumer preferences or disruptive technology innovations. Regardless of what they may face, the sustainability of their going concern may be at risk.
Your job in this final assignment is to select an organization that you feel would benefit from a human resource (HR) audit. Generally, the best candidates for study are publicly traded corporations, public institutions, and non-profit organizations with publicly available data. Keep in mind you will want to select an organization that strikes an even chord between being relevant (i.e., a company that has had recent media coverage about an HR topic relevant to the study of management and organizations, focus on current issues, and be of interest to the rest of the class), and feasible (i.e., analysis has a reasonable chance of success based on your detailed write-up if put into practice).
