Based on the above table, here are also some protective factors that apply to Mia and her family such as, family relationships and support from her maternal grandparents, connectedness with family and peers, positive family interactions and effective coping mechanisms to overcome stress and make good decisions despite the circumstances (Stephen, n.d.). There are also some social determinant risks that apply to Mia and her family which includes their living situation (living in a small apartment), parental depression due to the stressfulness of financial security and a lack of education which is a barrier to Katrina obtaining a better job to support their family.
If I had the opportunity to ask additional questions, I would inquire about any issues with obtaining food, diet, history of tobacco, alcohol or drug use in the home and whether Mia has a history of any developmental issues. I would like to know more about Mia's medical coverage, health status and her last visit to the PCP and dentist. It seems that Mia is visiting the clinic to receive her shots to go to school; therefore, asking questions about her last doctor/dentist visit is sufficient to determine if she receives routine care. It is also important to ask about any environmental concerns (safety, violence, risk...etc.) and inquire about any issues in their apartment (mold, dampness, pesticides, water quality...etc.). In addition, I would ask the family about their transportation needs and access to available resources. Lastly, I would like to know about the health and well-being of the father.
There are several opportunities to provide educational support to Mia and her family. First and foremost, it is important to educate Mia's mom on community resources available to assist her with obtaining her diploma. By obtaining her diploma, Mia's mother will be able to work toward finding a better job to improve their family's socioeconomic status. I would also educate the family on the importance of economic stability and its impact on their overall health and well-being. According to Healthy People 2030 (n.d), people with economic stability can access resources essential to life such as, stable housing, quality housing and food, and receive adequate healthcare. After all, financial stability plays a major role on your physical and mental well-being; therefore, it is important to consider its impact. Regarding Mia's mother depression, I would share that there are behavioral health networks available to provide mental health services to low-income families.
The most important area for educational support focuses on improving their socioeconomic status and providing information on available resources for low-income families to assist with housing, food, and healthcare. Studies show that low socioeconomic status is linked to negative health outcomes such as, diabetes, depression, life expectancy and poor overall health which increases the likelihood of morbidity and mortality (Fiscella & Williams, 2004). Therefore, with steady employment and sufficient income, people are more likely to live overall healthier lives.
To address this key area, I would provide Mia and her mother with educational material that list community resources available to low-income families in the community. Also, I would provide Mia and her family with educational material that provides information on state/federal programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to provide nutrition benefits, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help with locating affordable and accessible housing, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to provide financial assistance to achieve self-sufficiency (Florida Department of Children and Families, 2022). I would also share information to help the family locate childcare services for Mia. Mia's mother mentioned she is four and has not had much interaction with her peers. By helping her with childcare, Mia will be able to interact more and provides the foundation for all future learning, behavior and health. Lastly, I would provide Mia's mother with information on Career Source to assist her with finding better employment and assist her with attaining her General Education Development (GED) which help improve her opportunities in the workforce. Together, the programs can improve their socioeconomic status and enhance their overall health and well-being.
