You have been assigned to help open supplies for a procedure that is scheduled to begin in thirty minutes. When you arrive in the operating room, the surgical first assistant, scrub nurse, and circulator are already in the process of opening supplies. The circulator thanks you for helping out and leaves to interview the patient in the holding are prior to bringing her back. As you look around, you see the back table has already been opened (it is now covered with a sterile drape), and instrument casket stands nearby on a small table with the top already removed, and the surgical assistant is in the process of tossing a pack of laparotomy sponges (from a peel pack) onto the back table where several sterile supplies are already opened. The pack of sponges hits a sterile basin, then a folded sterile gown for the surgeon, then falls to the floor. The scrub nurse turns to you and asks, "Since you are here to learn, what do you think he (the surgical assistant) should do next?"
