How would you respond to this statement? Recently, my coworker was rushed to the ER with severe, sudden onset abdominal pain with nausea and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. In reading these chapters in our textbook, I feel compelled to do more research on this topic. Diverticulitis occurs when bulging pouches develop in the large intestine become inflamed or infected. Diverticulitis can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea, fever, tenderness, diarrhea or constipation. The causes of diverticulitis are a bit muddy because the cause is not really known. However, researchers do believe that genetics and lifestyle choices play the biggest role in those that suffer from diverticulitis. In fact, my coworker's father also has diverticulitis and she has repeatedly said that she does not have a great diet as she primarily eats highly processed foods; however, she is relatively active. Antibiotics, probiotics, anti-inflammatories, and high-fiber foods are the current line of treatment for diverticulitis as well as lifestyle modifications to include a high fiber diet, being regularly active, and drinking more water.
